The Chobe National Park encompasses a range of ecosystems, including riverine forests, floodplains, woodlands, and savannah, providing a rich tapestry of landscapes and habitats for wildlife. The Savuti and Linyanti areas of the park are two specific areas that are exciting options to include on your Botswana safari.
The Savuti Marsh area in the western part of the park is known for its dramatic landscape and predator sightings, particularly lions and hyenas. The Savuti Channel, which flows intermittently, is a focal point for wildlife during the dry season
The Savuti Marsh is the relic of a large inland lake whose water supply was cut a long time ago by plate tectonics. Nowadays the marsh is fed by the erratic Savuti Channel, which dries up for long periods, then curiously flows again as a consequence of tectonic activity in the area. As a result of this variable flow, there are hundreds of dead trees along the channel bank. The region is also covered with extensive savannahs and rolling grasslands, which makes wildlife particularly dynamic in this section of the park.
During the dry season (May-Oct) both black and white rhino, warthog, greater kudu, impala, zebra, blue wildebeest and herds of elephant are seen.
During the rainy season, a rich birdlife of around 450 species is represented. Prides of lions, hyena’s and sometimes cheetah are sighted.
The Linyanti area is located in the northwestern part of the park (to the north of Savuti), and is known for its beautiful scenery and abundant wildlife, including large herds of elephants and buffalo. It’s also a prime spot for birdwatching, with numerous waterfowl and raptors.
The Linyanti Marsh is adjacent to the Linyanti River. To the west of this area lies Selinda Reserve and on the northern bank of the Kwando River is Namibia’s Nkasa Rupara National Park. Around these two rivers are riverine woodlands, open woodlands as well as lagoons, and the rest of the region mainly consists of flood plains.
There are large concentrations of lion prides, leopards, the endangered African wild dog, roan and sable antelope, hippopotamus pods, and herds of elephant.
The rarer red lechwe and sitatunga antelope and Nile crocodile also occur in the area.
